Clarence Everett Sperry, 91, of Philippi, died on Tuesday, October 7. He was born May 26, 1923 at Miletus, Doddridge County, West Virginia, son of the late C. Melvin Sperry and Mamie Cole Sperry. He graduated from Salem High School in 1941, and enrolled at Salem College. The Second World War interrupted his college career, where he and four brothers served in the armed forces. Two of the five were lost. His year of college mathematics caused the Navy Air Force to train him as a navigator. He spent 41 months in the South Pacific guiding PBY flying boats from one remote island to another. Following the war, he returned to Salem College, where he met Jody Haught of Ritchie County West Virginia. They were married on August 26, 1947, and both graduated from Salem College in 1948. After teaching at public schools in Harrison County and earning a Master's degree at West Virginia University, he taught mathematics at Alderson Broaddus College for 34 years, serving at times as Golf coach and Chairman of the Athletic Committee. An avid fisherman and golfer, for several years he also managed the Barbour Country Club. He retired from A-B in 1987. He was a long-time member of the Philippi Baptist Church, a 50-year member of the Philippi Kiwanis Club, where he was a recipient of the Hixson award for outstanding service, a 50+ year Mason, and a lifetime member of the Sperry-Davis VFW of Salem, West Virginia. In 2002, he was inducted into the Alderson-Broaddus Battler Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife, his son David Everett Sperry and wife Gail of Elmhurst, Illinois, daughter Barbara Burner and husband Gary of Grafton, West Virginia, and daughter Jeannie Sperry and husband Thomas Adamski of Rochester, Minnesota. In addition there are seven grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Friday, October 10, 2014 from 2-5 and 6-8 pm and on Saturday, October 11 from 8-11 am the service hour with Pastor Jon Villers officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery.
