Obituary of Charles Hayhurst
Charles William Hayhurst of Philippi WV died at Broaddus Hospital, Philippi Sunday August 14th 2011. The son of the late George Hershel and Pearl Vandergrift Hayhurst, Bill was born in Colfax WV on August 6th 1931 and was raised on the family’s dairy farm. Bill attended East Fairmont High School and graduated in 1950. He was an exceptional football player at East Fairmont high school and then went on to play at Fairmont State College where he graduated in 1954.
Bill married Helen Louise Musgrove May 29th 1955 and attended the D T Watson School of Physiatrics in Leesburgh Pa under a scholarship, graduating with a degree in Physical Therapy in 1956. Bill went on to serve in the U.S. Army for two years practicing Physical Therapy.
After being released from the Army, Bill and Louise settled in Fairmont where Bill opened a Physical Therapy office. Later Bill worked at Myers Clinic and Broaddus Hospital in Philippi WV and worked at the Heritage Nursing Home in Bridgeport, Good Samaritan in Belington, St. Barbara’s in Monongah and the Barbour County Home health.
He practiced as a physical therapist in West Virginia for 45 years and received awards from the state for his service.
He and Louise had three children, Paul William born December 14th 1959, Jack Robert born May 28th 1965 and Julie Ann born October 6th 1966.
Bill married Dorothy Moats in Las Vegas NV on October 19th 1983 and has resided in Philippi since then.
He is survived by his current wife, Dorothy of Philippi WV, two brothers; Robert of Lexington Ky and Jack of Sonoma Ca, two sons; Paul of Rockledge Fla, Rob of Houston TX and daughter Julie Lundberg of Kwajalein, Marshall Isl. Bill has 6 grandchildren, Zachery, Carlie Hayhurst, Lydia & Emily Hayhurst and Andrew & Jenna Lundberg.
Bill enjoyed the outdoors, was a great Steelers fan and was an avid bridge player.
Family will receive friends from 6-8PM Tuesday Aug 16th at Wrights Funeral Home (216 North Walnut Street, Philippi) and 6-9PM Wednesday Aug 17th at the Ford Funeral Home (201 Columbia Street, Fairmont).
Final rights will be conducted at the Ford Funeral Home in Fairmont at 11AM on Thursday Aug 18th. Interment will follow at the Grandview Memorial Gardens in Fairmont.
In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to the East Fairmont High School Athletic department.
