Elmisha "Sally" Haddix, age 91, a resident of Rt. 2 White Oak Community Philippi was called home by her heavenly father on Wednesday November 9, 2011. She was born Elmisha Sethamene Apperson on October 11, 1920 at Norton, WV a daughter of the late Avon H. and Virginia (Edmond) Apperson. On May 22, 1943 she was united in marriage to Charles M. Haddix, Jr. who predeceased her on August 9, 1988. They were married in the Mt. Vernon Place Church in Washington, DC. She is survived by her four children, Linda L. Pringle and husband Don of Philippi, Charles M. Haddix, III and wife Mary-Michelle of Summerfield, NC, Earl M. Haddix and wife Karen of Summerville, SC and Shirley Uznanski and husband Thomas of Berlin, Connecticut. She has 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. Also surviving are sisters, Avalene Kittle of Belington, Neva Correll of Somerset, KY, and Edna Chambers of Hardy, Virginia. Two brothers, Alvin D. Apperson of Flat Rock, MI and Raymond Apperson of S. Rockwood, MI also survive. Sally was predeceased by three sisters and four brothers. Numerous nieces and nephews survive also. Sally attended West Virginia schools graduating from Coalton High School. She worked in Washington, DC during WWII at Union Station selling train tickets to the service men. After her children were in School she became the credit manager at the JCPenney store in Oxon Hill, Maryland. She and Mr. Haddix raised their four children in Friendly Maryland and returned to their home state in 1975 to live out their retirement. Sally has always been very active until her death. She loved to travel and went across the United States and back. She traveled north into Canada and south to Florida. She also liked to work in her flower and did all her own yard work until she was 86 including weed whacking. She read lots of books and her bible was her favorite. She enjoyed organizing her family reunions each year and loved to entertain. Sally was a member of Central Chapel United Methodist Church on Rt. 92 where she faithfully attended and was the President for several years of the ladies fellowship at Church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 44 of Philippi and had been the President for three years and held the office of Americanism chairman also. Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home 216 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Friday November 11, from 5-8 pm and on Saturday November 12, from 8-11 am the service hour with Rev. Bill Smith and Rev. John H. Flynn, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery where Sally will be laid to rest by her husband.
