Obituary of Robert L. Mitchell

Robert L. Mitchell, "Jake," age 91 passed away December 24, 2012 at Mansfield Place, Philippi, WV. He was born on a farm near Arden, Nov. 23, 1921. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie "Hamp" and Ida Robinson Mitchell, his wife Ruth Matthews Mitchell and twin sons, Kevin and Kyle. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Gay Mitchell, sister and brother-in-law, Waunda (Forrest) McGee, brothers and sister-in-laws, Wilburt (Betty) Mitchell, Wilford (Mary) Mitchell and daughter-in-law, Marsha Poling Mitchell. He is survived by his son Robert L. Mitchell II of Charleston, WV and daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly (Paul) Willson of Waldwick, NJ. Also surviving are one brother and sister-in-law, Willard (Elaine) Mitchell of Columbus, OH, grandchildren, Jayson and Justin Mitchell, Amanda and Matthew Willson & many nieces and nephews. Jake was a graduate of Philippi High School, class of 1941. He served four years in the army during World War II as a field artillery Sergeant. He served in North Africa, Sicily, and in the 10th Mountain Division in Italy and was a recipient of the bronze star. Jake retired from the coal industry as a maintenance person and truck driver. He was a member of the Crim-Memorial United Methodist Church, Bigelow Lodge # 52 AF & AM, Philippi Eastern Star Chapter #41, and American Legion Post 44. His crowning glory was his Family. In Philippi he was a presence of humility, friendliness, and down home values. He was once asked, "Jake why don't you run for Mayor?” His reply, "I'm afraid I would win!” So long Jake, you will be missed by all. Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home 216 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Friday December 28, from 3-8 pm and on Saturday December 29, from 8 am – 1 pm the service hour with Rev. Tim Bleigh officiating. Interment will follow in the Floral Hills Memorial Garden in Quiet Dell with military honours being accorded.
