Gary is and always will be truly one of the finest men I have ever known. A once in a lifetime friend who is irreplaceable, a rare and unique teacher and mentor, extraordinary family man, decent, honest and oh so determined! He will always be with me, and being kindred spirits, I know that he and I will meet again. To that I offer the words of 19th century Bengali poet, Rabindramath Tagore: “Death is not extinguishing the light; it is putting out the lamp because a new dawn has come.” My friend and spiritual brother is now seeing and feeling the warm glow of that dawn and he will forever be in all of our hearts.

Dr. Cunningham was a mentor of mine in dental school. His sense of humor, his optimism, and cheeky honesty always brought a smile to my face. He always had a way of making something bad seem okay. He was a really wonderful leader and a teacher. His impact on me on so many other students will be remembered forever. My heart goes out to his family, it was a blessing to know him.

Dear Lori and family - we regret not being able to attend Gary's memorial service in Philippi this past week. Our brother-in-law passed away in Massachusetts and we are attending his service in Palmer, Mass. Gary was a very special friend of mine and our Byrer family. He was a classmate and football teammate at Philippi High and classmate at Fairmont State as well - many great memories as well - and a great assistant football coach to my dad at Philip Barbour. What a great friend he has been over the years - we will miss him! We are praying for you all at this time of loss - since tr ely, Charlie & Jan Byrer & family

I am grateful to have had Gary as a teacher, a coach, a dentist and a friend of the family. I can still hear his boisterous laugh when telling a joke. He is sadly missed.

The firmest handshake, the biggest smile, and the vibe that our school was the best, and going to get even better, radiated from Gary Cunningham. A guy who came from little ended up to be a LOT. "Cunningham" was a REALLY big deal at WVU School of Dentistry. He had the ability to make you feel your were his best buddy along with all his other best buddies. Whether in the role of dad/grandpap to students or fun colleague to the faculty and staff, Gary's warmth lit up any room he was in. His nicknames for students are legendary. In a stressful time (and it is really stressful for a lot of dental students) Gary could make them feel he had their back. He had all our backs.
I taught in a class with Gary. He was committed to learning and teaching the WVU way. He has helped to launch many a successful career. I am thankful to have known him as more than a colleague. He was a buddy.
We'll go on, but the place won't be the same without "Cunningham".
