Obituary of Don Frey
Don Robert Frey, 88, of Philippi, W. Va., passed away Saturday evening, June 6, 2015. He was born April 28, 1927 in Moatsville, W. Va., the son of the late Earl and Ada Dove (Addie) Shaffer Frey. His wife of fifty-three years, Mary Louise Murphy Frey, preceded him in death in 2004.
He is survived by daughter, Brenda, and her husband, Paul Zickefoose, of Philippi; daughter, Linda Frey, and her husband, Robert Pyles, of Bethel Park, Pa.; and son, Larry, and his wife, Mary Frey, of Valparaiso, Ind. He was the proud grandfather of seven: Julie Zickefoose of Philippi; Miranda Zickefoose (Kevin) Skidmore of Philippi; Jason (Lauren), Jared (Hanna), and Sara Frey, all of Valparaiso, Ind., and Justin and David Pyles of Bethel Park, Pa. He was also blessed with four great-grandchildren, Tyler Zickefoose, Haleigh and Ariana Skidmore, and
Emily Frey. He is also survived by one sister, Hilda Malcolm, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by brother, Wm. Ansell Frey, sister, Geraldine Sutton, and brothers-in-law, Rex Sutton and Wendell Malcolm.
Mr. Frey retired as Superintendent of Supplies for the the former Bethlehem Mines Corporation, Marion/Barbour Division. Following retirement, he served for several years on the Philippi City Council and the Philippi Board of Trade. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, a Past Master of the Bigelow Lodge # 52 AF & AM Philippi, a Thirty-second Degree Mason with the Osiris Temple, Wheeling, W. Va., a member of Demolay # 11 Commandary, Grafton, W. Va., a fifty-year member of Philippi Chapter 41 of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a fifty-plus year member of Tygart Valley #39 Royal Arch Masons, where he was a Past High Priest.
He enjoyed fishing, golf, playing cards, and watching almost any sporting event. Ever the optimist, Mr. Frey was always sure that each upcoming season would find the Mountaineers on top.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Tuesday June 9, from 3-8 pm and on Wednesday June 10, from 8 am- 1 pm the service hour with Pastor Bryan Headley officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery with Bigelow Lodge #52 AF & AM conducting graveside rites.
