Herbert R. Holbert, age 92 a resident of Mt. Liberty Community passed away Thursday February 20, 2014 at his residence. He was born August 4, 1921 in Belington, WV a son of the late Thomas and Bertha (Daugherty) Holbert. He was united in marriage September 30, 1942 to Carol (Corley) Holbert for 71 years who survives. Also surviving Three daughters; Dianna Johnson Davide of Philippi Linda Vanmeter of White Plains, MD Brenda Condon of Weymouth, MA One son; Danny Holbert and wife Kathy of Philippi One sister; Geneva Layne of Philippi Grandchildren; G.T. Johnson and wife Belinda of Philippi, Kelly McPherson and husband Johnny of MD, Darren Johnson of Philippi, Heather Whetzel and husband Rick of VA, Stacy Peddicord and husband Rob of MD, Tommy Condon and wife Crystal of MA, Jennifer Whetzel and husband Tommy of Philippi, Mandy and Sue Westburg of MA, Timmy Bisceglia and wife Megan of Maine Great grandchildren; Jessica Cecil and husband Jackson of FL, Samantha Roy and husband Earl of Philippi, Allie Whetzel and Chris Whetzel both of VA, Jacob Peddicord of MD, Travis McPherson of MD, Allanya Peddicord of MD, Matthew McPherson, Justin McPherson both of MD, Cameron Whetzel and Emma Whetzel both of Philippi and Samantha Condon of MA. Several nieces and nephews Herbert was preceded in death by two sisters; Virginia Leahy and Juanita Holbert, two brothers; Thomas Holbert and Homer Holbert, four son-in-laws George Johnson, John Davide, Ken Vanmeter and Tom Condon. Herbert worked as a warehouse supervisor for Safe-Way Foods. He served in the US Navy during WWII on the USS Jobb in the Pacific Ocean. Herbert was an active member of the American Legions Post #44 where he participated in 150 honor guard services, a lifetime member of the Belington VFW #410, a member of the Barbour Church of Christ, the Mount Liberty Community and the Barbour County Senior Center. Herbert enjoyed antique cars, making apple butter and collecting Fisher-Price toys. Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home 216 N. Walnut St. Philippi on Sunday February 23, from 3-8 pm and on Monday February 24, from 8- 11:30 am the service hour with Evangelist Stan Jenkins officiating.
