Obituary of Philip Dale Mercer
Philip Dale Mercer, 61, passed away July 26, 2020 as the result of a motorcycle accident. Philip was born in West Warwick, Rhode Island on January 26, 1959, the son of Paul W. and Phylis (Barteaux) Mercer. He is survived by his loving wife and childhood sweetheart , Karen (Spurgeon) Mercer, his mother, Phylis Mercer, one son: Adam Mercer, Bonus son: William Hess & spouse Sarah (Marshall) Hess, Bonus daughter: Sarah (Hess) Sphon & spouse Clyde Sphon, his sisters: Joni A. Hannah & spouse John Hannah, and Patricia Mercer, brothers: Billy J. Mercer & spouse Terri Mercer, and Paul E. Mercer and partner Hilda Fairbanks; five grandchildren: Shayla George, Briella and Alanah Sphon and Liam and Amelia Hess, along with several nieces and nephews.
Philip was preceded in death by his daughter Phoebe Dawn Mercer, father Paul W. Mercer, and brother Randy J. Mercer.
Phil retired from the city of Philippi in February 2020. He was a skilled woodworker, and talented carpenter. His hobbies were hunting and fishing and metal recycling. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who truly loved his family with all his heart. Philip was a man of faith and attended the Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in Philippi.
Prior to moving to West Virginia, Philip worked at the Tampa Greyhound Racetrack for 32 years as a carpenter. He was previously married to Becky (Almon) McMullen.
Family and friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home and Crematory 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi, on Friday July 31, from 4-8 pm and on Saturday August 1, from 8 am – 1 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 pm with Pastor Tami Shoup officiating. Interment will be at the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery in Philippi, WV.
